What is Duo Chat?

Duo Chat is the conversational AI assistant within the GitLab Duo Agent Platform for teams working across software development and delivery. It supports project-level work such as generating code, writing tests, explaining code, and refactoring. Rather than considering only an isolated file, it can draw on GitLab context spanning code, issues, merge requests, pipelines, and deployments, giving developers, DevSecOps practitioners, and security teams a way to address engineering tasks inside their existing lifecycle environment.

Beyond interactive chat, the surrounding platform provides specialized agents and combines one or more agents into multistep flows that can respond to GitLab events. These capabilities cover work such as planning, code review, security analysis, and diagnosing CI/CD failures, while the AI Catalog provides a central place to activate and manage agents and flows. Use depends on a GitLab environment: existing customers need GitLab 18.8 or later, organizational roles and group policies govern where automation can operate, and self-hosted language models are available with GitLab Self-Managed deployments.

Key features of Duo Chat

  • Lifecycle Context

Duo Chat can use GitLab Orbit to connect code, issues, merge requests, pipelines, and deployments, grounding responses and engineering actions in continuously updated project context rather than only the file currently in view.

  • Code and Test Assistance

Conversational assistance covers generating code and tests, explaining existing implementations, and fixing or refactoring code. Related agents can also perform automated reviews on merge requests, extending the workflow from implementation into change feedback.

  • Agents and Multistep Flows

Specialized agents handle planning, coding, security analysis, and analytics, and one or more agents can be assembled into a multistep flow. GitLab events such as mentions or assignments can start these flows for repeatable delivery work that crosses lifecycle stages.

  • Central Management and Governance

The AI Catalog centralizes discovery, activation, and management of agents and flows, while policies restrict whether and where they may run and which models they may use. Flow sessions retain trigger details and links to CI/CD job logs for traceability.
