What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is OpenAI's general-purpose AI assistant for individuals and teams. Conversation is the common entry point, but its input and output are not limited to text: users can provide questions, files, images, or structured data and use the same product for explanation, drafting, organization, coding help, image generation, and voice interaction.

Rather than being only a question-and-answer interface, ChatGPT combines several task-specific work surfaces. Search is suited to current information with source links, Deep Research plans and conducts multi-source investigation, Canvas supports iterative editing of longer writing or code, and data analysis can inspect files and execute calculations. Users can stay in a quick conversation or move into a workflow designed for a longer task.

Projects keep chats, files, and instructions together for ongoing work, while Memory can retain preferences across conversations when enabled. Custom GPTs package stable instructions, knowledge, and selected tools into reusable assistants. The product covers many kinds of work, but access to models, tools, usage limits, and team controls varies by plan and region, and consequential facts or calculations still require verification.

Key features of ChatGPT

  • One conversation for text, images, files, and voice

Users can combine written prompts with documents, spreadsheets, screenshots, or images and continue by voice on supported devices. Multiple input types can remain part of the same conversational task.

  • Search current information with sources

ChatGPT Search retrieves information from the web and includes source links in its response. It is useful for time-sensitive questions while keeping the original pages available for verification.

  • Conduct deep research for complex questions

Deep Research proposes an editable research plan, then works across public websites, uploaded files, and enabled apps to synthesize a structured report with citations.

  • Analyze spreadsheets and structured data

After a CSV or spreadsheet is uploaded, ChatGPT can run code for cleaning, statistics, trend analysis, and visualization. The tool executes calculations, but users should still inspect the inputs and conclusions.

  • Iterate on work in Canvas

Canvas places longer writing, code, or layouts in a separate editing surface. Users can select a specific section for revision, edit directly, and continue refining the work across versions.

  • Preserve context with Projects and GPTs

Projects collect the chats, files, and instructions for ongoing work. Custom GPTs turn a stable role, knowledge set, and selected tools into a reusable specialized assistant.
