Gemini is Google's multimodal AI assistant for web and mobile use, accepting text, images, files, voice, and camera input. It supports everyday questions, writing, and content understanding, can use Google Search for current information, and—with permission—can work with personal context from selected Google services.
Different levels of work share the same entry point. A quick request can stay in normal chat, Gemini Live supports real-time spoken interaction, Deep Research proposes a research plan and investigates sources, and Canvas provides a separate space for editing documents, code, presentations, or simple applications. Users do not need a completely separate product for each of these workflows.
Gems preserve instructions for a recurring role or task. When services such as Gmail or Drive are connected, Gemini can also retrieve relevant material within the permissions granted by the user. The experience is especially convenient for people already working in Google's ecosystem, but feature availability varies by account type, region, age, and subscription, and web-grounded or generated results still require source review.
Gemini can combine text, images, and uploaded files in one conversation to explain visuals, summarize material, compare content, or answer follow-up questions about a document. Formats and limits vary by account.
When a question depends on current web information, Gemini can use Google Search to ground its response. Users should still open the related sources to confirm dates, context, and applicability.
Deep Research first produces an editable plan, then combines the web, uploaded files, NotebookLM notebooks, and connected Google services into a report that can be reviewed and exported.
Canvas provides a dedicated workspace for creating or editing documents, code, presentations, and simple applications. Users can request targeted revisions and transform research into other output formats.
After a user enables the connection, Gemini can retrieve relevant context from Gmail, Drive, and other supported services for summarizing mail, working with documents, or combining private and public information.
Gems are customized versions of Gemini with persistent instructions for a role, tone, objective, or process. They support recurring work without requiring the full prompt to be recreated each time.
